Diet

This snake is a carnivore. It mainly eats small mammals such as kangaroo rats, deer mice, and pack rats. They will sometimes eat lizards and small birds.

In general, boas are ambush predators. They can tell when prey is near and can stick their tongues in the air to catch scent particles. Then, they’ll lay ambush until the prey is within reach. Then they will spring forward with open jaws, capture their prey, and bite down on them to prevent them from escaping. The rosy boa snake will begin to coil its body around its prey and squeeze until they are dead. Next, it will start to swallow the prey from the head.
