Uromastyx Lizard For Sale
Uromastyx is a genus of lizards that belongs to the family Agamidae. It is a genus native to the Middle East and Africa. Member species are popularly referred to as called uromastyces, spiny-tailed lizards, dabb lizards or mastigures.
Primarily, lizards in the genus Uromastyx are herbivorous, but sometimes eat other small animals, young lizards and insects. Most of their waking hours time is spent hiding in underground chambers at night, basking in the sun. They tend to find comfort in rocky, hilly areas with accessible vegetation and good shelter.
Description
Uromastyx species have different sizes e.g.36 in (91 cm) or more for U aegyptia and 10 in (25 cm) for U. macfadyeni. The length of neonates or hatchlings is usually not more than 3–4 in (7–10 cm). The colors of these lizards change according to the season and temperature, just like many reptiles. The colors become lighter in warm weather, especially when basking, but during cool weather, they appear dull and dark. The skin absorbs sunlight more effectively due to the darker pigmentation.
They have a muscular and heavy spiked tail which can very quickly be swung at an attacker. This behavior is usually accompanied by an open-mouthed display of (small) teeth and hissing. In a bid to thwart intruders, Uromastyx for sale generally sleep with their tails closest to the opening of their burrows.
Distribution
Uromastyx live in a range stretching through most of Northeast and North t Africa, Iran and the entire Middle East. Species sighted further east are now classified in the genus Saara. These reptiles can also be found at heights above sea level to well over 3,000 ft (900 m). They are regularly sold in produce markets and eaten by local peoples.
Diet
Most of the water a Uromastyx lizard needs is gotten from the vegetation they eat. They generally eat any surrounding vegetation in the wild. Before heading off to find a more sustainable food source, baby Uromastyx eat their own mother’s feces as their first meal after hatching,. This is necessary to develop a proper gut flora, which is needed to digest the plants they eat.
At certain times of the year, when it is hot in the wild, these reptiles feed on insects and their only available food source would be insects.
As earlier stated, uromastyx is primarily herbivorous. What food you can obtain consistently will be heavily influenced by your geographic location.
Finding a Uromastyx
It is not common for the Uromastyx to be bred in captivity in the U.S.A. However, this is changing with time as more keepers are having a great time breeding this reptile. However, a big challenge is the consistent availability of healthy animals, and some species remain out of reach to the average keeper. Nearly all Uromastyx in captivity are gotten from the wild. Purchasing a wild caught animal has its advantages and disadvantages, but the fact is that most buyers either have limited options or none at all.
